These meditations on writing were lovely. There are theories that suggest hand-writing and also hand drawing support our brains working bettter....and we should practice those hand skills... along with some perpetual pilgrimage I think!!!
Your reflections about learning cursive handwritting is very interesting. As a curator I am reading manuscripts of writters from Middle Age to our century and it is true that in order to read it you have to know how to draw the letters and also Watch a lot of letters. I think also that children should learn cursive writting in order to learn how to read both matchs together. Our hands make our minds . Thank you for sharing this Precious moment of quiet work and thoughts ! An other thought comes to my mind : looking after words’meanings in a dictionary is also a primary apprenticeship we can as ourself what would happen if children learn everything through a screen ?
This was such a good time hanging with you, Patti. I wrote ‚Moon‘ backwards. 🌙 The sound of the ink-dipped nib on paper transported me to my teenage years. I still have the tools to retry it.
I'm a trained calligrapher, so watching someone quietly plying a pen is something I've done numerous times in classes and workshops. It made me feel good to watch you writing! And I love the idea of just "hanging out" with you. Thank you for inviting us into your home this way. ❤️
There have been so many spurious pearl clutching arguments about the loss of cursive. Here is the true wisdom. Cursive is not a necessity to become a cubicle slave that is true but it is art, history and continuity. What will be lost when we cannot read the ancient texts letters from grandma included. Cursive should be taught not to gain proficiency but in the broader context of human creation. It will not because art, music, literature are of no value to our capitalist overlords.
Hi Patti - I love hanging with you, very calming and soothing. Today I found myself talking to myself with the same rhythm and pace that you use. I like that and I think it means you’re getting into me. Welcome.
What is more personal than the handwriting of an individual. And how we need more of the personal in this impersonal, disconnected and inhuman world. Cursive is connecting, literally and figuratively. Thanks Patti for drawing our attention toward this. 🖋️
Yes, please continue making videos. i love hanging out with you. In talking about nothing you manage to talk about a lot of things and I enjoy it immensely.
Unfortunately our world has been in a bad way for so long, at times it's hard to stay positive. But try we must. Thank you Patti Smith when I stop to listen to your talks, they just bring on a smile.

I love pens like this! And the inkwell is such a beautiful colour.
I was wondering what the animal crackers are like - so it’s very nice to see the photo of the box!!

So relaxing and calming listening to you, feels just like a visit ❤️ I too used to have a fountain pen and also sealing wax and the little stamps!

All around a time well spent.
Romper stomper bomper boo.... I appreciate these visits so much...especially the book references. Would you share your drawings sometime?
Animal crackers are good comfort food.
"Animal crackers and cocoa to drink,
That is the finest of suppers I think;
When I'm grown up and can have what I please
I think I shall always insist upon these."

You are a person who moves a lot, sweats a lot and may be more dehydrated than you used to be.
That could be the reason for your emergency visit to Italy last year.
You have done your schedule, but now you should be better off in a state of NOTHING.
