I hear it as a metaphor for earthly life and then the heavenly hereafter.

Beautiful poem, such imagery, and a lovely surprise to realize that Ray Bradbury titled one of his books The Golden Apples of the Sun.

I memorized this poem when I was a teen and when I realized that Ray Bradbury had taken the title of his book from Yates. A portion of it appears on my website. Thanks for the reading, Patti.

Thank you Patti , and belated Happy St Patrick’s Day to you & Mr Tony Shanahan. This is a beautiful poem . I was introduced to the Great Poet Yeats’ poems by a close cousin who did her Master’s Thesis on Yeats at the university of Edinburgh . I was 14 then & have been enchanted ever since by his poetry. Thank you for sharing this delicate poem .

Happy belated Saint Patricks to Mr. Shanahan and thanks for his compositions and powerful vocals.

A positive poem, optimistic like you, thank you. Very visual and "looking" easy.

Mike Scott of The Waterboys composed music for this poem and sings it on his album 'An Appointment with Mr Yeats' (all tracks being based on Yeats poetry). The Waterboys 1983 single 'A Girl Called Johnny' was inspired by Patti Smith. Mike Scott is a fan of Yeats and of Patti Smith.

I have barely scratched the surface of Yeats. I have a thick volume of his works and have slowly picked my way through it, like I do all of the poetry books on my shelves, I drop in and savor, but this one, I have not yet read, so it was a great treat! Thank you!

Thank you everyone. I read this poem as a young girl. I was taken by the music that flows through it. Many of Yeats poems one can sing. I also loved how Aengus's devotion did not diminish through time. Believing in a dream....
