Patti! I’ve missed you!…guess Summer detached me from a electronic device where I see you 99% of the time, but if family and band would like to go to Saratoga Springs for flood relief Phish concerts, and a bit of beautiful animals racing to see who’s the fastest horse in Saratoga…you have a ride…in a 1977 Chrysler New Yorker…a “pimp powder blue!”….should cost more than flying…sorry all environmentalists out there…I’m just a passenger!
I hope you're resting well after your time on the road. I'm watching and enjoying a video of you live at Stern Grove, while relaxing in London. Noticing your black jacket and its sheen its plum lining, I began to wonder if you've kept the many black jackets you've worn over the years?
I love when you interject the mundane in with the philosophical in your videos. It always brings me a smile and a chuckle.
One question keeps coming to my mind and so I apologize for my ignorance beforehand as I know so little about poets and their poetry. Why were poets seemingly revered so much more in the 1800s than today? Or, am I just out of the loop?
My pleasure, Dian. I accidentally deleted my comment. Clunky fingers and not paying attention. I'm glad you got to read it and Wing certainly filled in the details. Like I said, welcome to the community. It's a wonderful place.
Dian- as a founding member who has been here with Patti from the very start, I can tell you that "things have changed"! When Patti started on Substack to write The Melting, you (not my country New Zealand), were all in lockdown, and life for a musician was completely abnormal. Now, of course, Patti has many more projects on the go, and we relish the variety she gives us. I printed out a hard copy of every episode of the Melting, and have it compiled into a hefty book. You can do that by going through the archives. There may be more to come, or maybe not.....but nothing really matters!
Hi Dian, and welcome. I think it’s great that you took the time and made the effort to go back to the archives and read early missives from “The Melting.” It’s an amazing work, and I can see why you would want to know what happens.
There is, though, a relationship that has evolved herein that entails certain tacit boundaries. Patti has been extraordinarily candid about her writing process — how the changes in the world affected her conception and way of dwelling in “The Melting,” and being the writer that she is, she can’t just turn out a story that has not been authentically, imaginatively lived.
Although many of us came for something (as yet unknown and unformed) called “The Melting,” what we have come to feel and understand is that “The Melting” is not a one-dimensional entity, but more phenomenologically, a melting of whatever life has thrown Patti’s way, our way, the way of the world and the realities of being alive in this moment in time.
I would encourage you to see all the extraordinary things that this platform offers. For the past few months, for example, Patti has been offering what can only be called a master class (herein affectionately referred to as “a Smithposium”) on Arthur Rimbaud.
I guess what I am trying to say is that you will get the most out of this platform if you can adopt a little “Negative Capability”: that is, as the poet John Keats articulated in a letter, when one “is capable of being in uncertainties, Mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact & reason.”
Don’t worry about when “The Melting” will be done. Be assured that if you hang around here, you will be rewarded with poetry, music, history, humor, empathy, camaraderie, opportunities for thinking and imagining that far exceed what you could dream.
Patti gives us so much of her time and shares so much wondrous information about things we would otherwise not even discover.....so we should practice a little patience regarding The Melting....don't you think?

Gregory Corso -- MY GOD, WHAT A LIFE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_Corso
I don’t know Gregory Corso’s writing, but now I have to look him up. I love the title of that book.

I so appreciate Jim V and Wing for filling me in on Patti’s Stack. Thank you!

This...this is why I look forward to your posts Patti!
I hope the "various shades of grey" of Portland are past you now.
PATTI'S MUSIC
When pain envelops you,
punch the music
When you've lost all hope,
flies,
with music
When you think you're a loser,
listen to the music
If despite everything,
you think life is true
enjoy the music.
(thanks Patti,kiss to Cairo.)
Thanks for a great show in Seattle! What a power you are! Hope you all had a good time too.

Judi - I only ask because I am a new subscriber and don't have any of your history with The Melting. Don't be so quick to judge.

Thanks Wing. It’s good to know the big picture. I appreciate that. I didn’t know about the archives. I will indeed look and read. I appreciate You!

Are you still working on The Melting?
Do you know when we might get it?

Love Portland. Love Corso. And Love Powell's. Stay cool, Patti. Thanks for the read of Corso and the intro from Burroughs.
