I love hearing these memories about your mum. My relationship with my mum was problematic too at times, with my dad too, but listening to you talk here has made me think that I can honour the good bits by taking stock of them on their birthdays and special anniversaries. It’s a good way of addressing mixed feelings but recognising that we’re all a mixed bag and that there are very good bits to cherish too. Pauline xx
how beautiful Patti! i too had a mother who taught me the value of reading and books. my earliest memories being of us reading together in her bed. as she was dying (with COPD from smoking) she asked me to read to her "Just Kids" which she loved. she loved art and saw Robert's genius so the book, and me reading it to her, was very special. we too would talk about books and movies and movie stars. we would love to talk about the academy awards and the movies, fashion, etc. afterwards. awww, i miss my mommy. thank you again for this
Like some other folks here have written, your mom responded to me when I sent letters or books to you, and she would always throw in a little treat: a button, mini poster or article, etc. I valued our correspondence and have kept everything she ever sent me to this day. How lovely that you shared some recollections, and your happiness, with us. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing about your Mom on her birthday! I love the story of you and your Mom traveling to the bookstore on your birthday! What a special birthday treat!
I, too, think of my Mom every day. Her birthday is coming up, March 29th and I will sing a song, just for her.
I love you, Patti. Thanks for sharing your mother’s birthday with us. So beautiful to enjoy your performance of “Mother Rose.” Also thanks for reminding us that the way we start the day sets the tone for the whole day.
I eat oatmeal, too. I like to put cherries and banana slices with a dollop of organic peanut butter in it. When my mother was dying in hospice (Dec 20, 2017) I crawled into bed with her and sang “You Are My Sunshine”. She used to sing it to me when I was very young. I thanked her for being my mommy and told her that we would always be together in my heart. She was very sedated, but a tear rolled down her face.
For all of our mothers and to you who are mothers as I am too, I am grateful for giving life to us so we may give life too. Passing it on.
Also I’m grateful to my father for introducing me to a pinch of salt in black coffee, it’s so great to drink every so often. Have you tried that Patti Smith?
So great to have happy memories !! Cherish them .. happy bday mother rose !!!
Also...never stop rambling. I love it xx

LOVE THE DOUBLE RAMBLE
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! We had to do the same prayer!
How wonderful. 😊 If I ever had a bookstore (which I don’t think will happen at this point in my life!) I would do as Mr. Leary. Such sweet memories.

How touching to honor your mommy.
It makes me think of my own mother who was awesome too.
She was forced to leave school early to help support the family. She was an A student.
She became a librarian at an air force base!
But her passion was music and singing.
She was a blues singer who would go on gigs at night.
I'd watch her leave in her gorgeous gowns.
She loved me dearly even though she was only 19 when she gave birth to me.
I was honored to be her caretaker for the last 10 years of her life.
Love you mommy
