One of the best books I've ever read. My book group universally adored it and they aren't old punks, just i am! Also had the privilege to sell many copies to customers who believed me.

I just tuned into your podcast/broadcast and I wondered if you were THE Patti Smith. And sure enough! You are. I’m 73 and I am thinking you sound and your demeanor is similar to me, halting hoarse voice, going through health bumps but nothing terminal. I appreciate your offerings and you encourage me. Carry on.

Patti, I discovered Just Kids only last year, but it has already become my favourite book of all time. Thank you for your passion, wisdom and love of coffee.

I missed the chance to grab tickets for your upcoming tour, but you better believe I'll be at Beacon first thing in the cold morning come November to try and grab a ticket to see you.

Thank you for changing my life for the better.

A Gift for Patti—We were not supposed to live this long. A memory from the Chelsea Hotel.—

"The Chelsea Hotel had a hierarchy. The more prestigious the guest, the higher the floor. Troublemakers lived in the basement with the ghosts of Sid and Nancy."

The Chelsea Hotel

10

In her mind, Alan was to blame for her fall from grace and her sudden exodus uptown to the Chelsea Hotel. Infamous for death and rebirth, both in the literal and the spiritual sense, the hotel had a well-known history of housing a bizarre array of guests. Inside, the thick iron banisters lined hallways haunted by the living and the dead. Petra should know she was one of its specters. Clad in pink striped silk pajamas, she roamed the halls, night after night, chasing hallucinations.

By this time, she was a 98-pound, flesh-on-bone, cocaine-crazed, drug-dealing, heroin addict. The Chelsea, like a hip, exclusive club, had a hierarchy. The more prestigious the guest, the higher the floor. Troublemakers lived in the basement with the ghosts of Sid and Nancy. They placed her on the fourth floor overlooking 23rd Street. Stanley, the hotel proprietor, would soon regret that prominent placement.

“I should have paid more attention to her and less to the man paying for the room.”

“Oh, Stanley, did you think I had a sugar daddy? Well, in a sick, twisted way, I guess I do.”

Hey Patti, I just finished the book yesterday for the first time. My mother gave me it for Christmas and it has been the best gift I have ever received. Your mix of words combining into sentences, paragraphs and then into chapters have greatly impacted me and my look towards the future as things change in life. Thank you so much for “just kids” and “m train” as they truly are (in my opinion) apart of some of the greatest literature, in the catalogues of dozens of other books published throughout the years. I will carry this book forever, but I can’t wait to see what’s next from you.

Patti…🖤 It’s the last day of January and you are not well. I am almost positive, other than you running yourself ragged, that you are truly disheartened beyond belief by the election.

Don’t forget that PEOPLE HAVE THE POWER so please rest and know WE are out here resisting in many many ways.

I have been a subscriber from the beginning, gosh I even knew Cairo and am an old New Yorker.

You have trained your Army well, now, take a break, get to the Ocean and take time for serious reading.

Love from Ocracoke Island NC
