When I was a child, I was chasing the boy next door and ran straight into a tree and broke my glasses in half. I came inside, balanced the glasses on my face and hoped my mother wouldn’t notice (seriously!) she laughed so hard that I got mad. I’m not sure what the lesson was in that, not to chase boys, watch out for trees or never to forget the sound of my mothers laugh.
Hi Patyi, when you mentioned your father taping up his glasses..it reminded me of the time my dad dtopped his glasses into a tin of grey paint...he cleaned the paint of with white spirit begore taking them back to the opticians...the worst thing is they were on loan from the opticians ehile his own pair of specs were being repaired...it took a bit of explaining as to why the borrowed pair smelled of paing thinner!!! Happy days... X
The revenge of Dr. Possum! Happy Birthday Mr. Burroughs, and thank you for sharing this memory. My grandfather used say "every new language learned is like a whole new diploma". And then I think of poetry and music and again I believe that s the universal language even when I don t get all the words.
Love your stories. :) Meeting your heroes is one thing, but becoming friends and mentors is a new level. So far the books I've been lucky enough to have published have been in the U.S. and UK. But nothing yet in, say, Italian... which I would just be over the moon about. Someday. Picking up your Book of Days tomorrow!
I wish you luck with your glasses. I picked up the Book of Days at your Philadelphia Library visit. My sister, wife and I made a New Year's resolution to use your photos as daily inspiration for meditation and creative writing. The dedicated creative process makes our days more fulfilling. Thanks so much for all your creation and what you share with us.

Happy birthday William Burroughs. My experience as a lifelong glasses wearer is to always have a spare pair, I go to specsaver where you can get a second pair half price, don’t know if it’s same in America☺️❤️ as a child I had separate reading & distance glasses, if there was a lesson I disliked in school I used to ‘forget’ my reading glasses. They soon cottoned on to me though.🤣 Thank you as always Patti for sharing with us, hope you get new glasses very soon.
