I’m enjoying your Smithposium so much, Patti. I know next to nothing about the French poets, and I appreciate being introduced to the poetry of Rimbaud.

So interesting... in a lovely moment of synchronicity I just casually opened the book ‘Diary of an Art Dealer’ which I found has several different entries describing the diarist’s meeting with Marcel Proust. “He had great eyes of men from African deserts.”

I have never read Proust out of fear of not understanding. Can anyone recommend a book that I might start with? Thank you

I have always had an interest in history and how all the arts - artists, writers, and musicians of their time are bound together - a story of life in all forms of creativity, written, painted, and performed.

My most memorable friend in high school was a brilliant, sensitive and troubled young woman whose was born in Cuba, after her parents fled after Soviet imprisonment following German occupation of Poland. . Her father was a printer and a prolific diarist. His best friend became one of the most famous poets of this time. Avrom Sutzkever was born on July 15th and survived the horrors of unjust persecution by engaging in resistance fighting

It was during the mid 1960's that Faye developed an "addiction" to reading and spent all her spare change buying books. To me she gave a copy of Rimbaud's Illuminations, with the title page ripped and the inscription "To Babette, In rotten condition." Is it so very strange that I was to her the recipient since I was a new arrival in the school. In truth, writing was my matiere and despite not being a known quantity, I found myself Editor-in-Chief of the Newspaper, despite my obvious preference for poetry.

I have copious literature and history volumes in my collection including "The Complete Works of Baudelaire" in French and English and lately enjoy leafing through the French, testing my memory after decades of little exposure to the poets of my youth! Thanks to Patti and her devoted minions, we are continuing the journey together, even as we have come a far cry from our former selves. And yet, not so very different!

Congratulations! What an auspicious day for you and monsieur Proust. It took 4 attempts for me to read In Search of Lost Time. But that means I was familiar with the 1st third of the book. I’d read it 3 times already. Once I found the proper state of mind and finished it I got it. And 19th century French literature made sense to me in a way it hadn’t before.
