Just been able to watch the Tibet and Electric/Substack performances on replay. Bande à part! What a magic and yes, cosmic constellation this band is! Thanks so much for your generosity and for turning it into something so personal. "Lightning Striking (...)" - couldn't wish better for a product placement. Nearly finished, but, huh, it's a never-ending goldmine, so it will probably last forever :). What a warm, friendly and "light" book for the reader. So complete yet not overloaded. Few books really achieve this, to incorporate not only the musical and surrounding aspects through space and time, but also the feeling. And it's great fun, just like hanging around. Pretty humble, too. An absolute favourite read (and compilation)!

Patti, I love that we are in 2022 and doing what was done in the 19th century, parallel worlds.

It will be one a.m. here in Scotland - I'll have to watch the recording after.

Song requests:

For your own songs??

Wow - how long will you be playing for, can you do them all? :)

I don't think I've ever heard you sing "Lo and Beholden" live

Other artists?

There are so many wonderful songs you could do great justice to it's hard to pick.

KT Tunstall says she wrote "Suddenly I See" thinking of you in Robert Mapplethorpe's photo on Horses. Would be good to cover one of her songs, probably "Feel It All" I think you could convey the poetry and even give it a deeper meaning.

I’d love to hear you sing My Funny Valentine.

Expand full comment

Looking forward to this. Requests? Oh, so many lovely songs - Trespasses, Jackson Song are two favorites. I have enjoyed your recent late-night-hellos. Not sure if you're still looking for suggestions of things to read in the videos but here's one anyway: Cross That Line by Naomi Shihab Nye. I will be watching from Louisville, CO where we have recently gone through the extreme effects of climate change as a fire raced through our town on December 30th. My house still stands and our neighborhood was spared. People asked me what I took with me as I ran out of the house ahead of the fire. I said that I only had time to grab my laptop. I later said "Everything is irreplaceable and completely replaceable" although after thinking about it I knew I would have missed all the plaid shirts I inherited from my Dad when he died last year.

Hi Patti this is so great and will likely be the highlight of my week . Even if I can't watch it live since it'll be 2am in Basel, I'll definitely watch it soon after.

I would love to hear free money and beneath the southern cross. Maybe you could read your favorite Rimbaud poem.

I always enjoyed reading the travel episodes like your trip to french guiana. Maybe you could read part of it from Mtrain.

Thank you and a nice day to everyone here and best wishes from wintery Switzerland,

Warm thoughts from Ardens, Patti 🖤 What a gift, a live performance for your subscribers…I am so much looking forward for 2.2 ! It is also a very special day to me, as it is my beloved grandpa’s birthday. I actually wanted to make a special reading request, and prepared a picture to send you especially for that, but I just realized that we cannot publish pictures on Substack, so I will try to share it with you on Instagram. Anyway, I am on a creative process to write a show for 2023, I am working both with puppetry and live stage magic…And it would mean the world to me if you could read your poem « Wilderness », which is so dear to me. Also, I would love to hear you read some Emily Dickinson, especially « Whoever disenchants A single Human soul… » …

Sorry in advance for my broken english, I will never thank you enough for being what you are, and inspiring me so much in my daily life. Merci, du fond du coeur. Tendres pensées depuis Charleville-Mézières. 🖤

This is so awesome, Patti. Thanks for performing online again. This request might be a tough one, but 25th Floor has been on my mind lately and I would love to hear it live....For me the song is about the power of Rock n roll to give us strength and push us to create. If you can't play it on the 2nd, maybe @ the shows in NYC in February? (I sure hope they happen this time as I know you all do, too.) Many thanks for being so awesome.

Dear Patrica. It breaks my heart to tell you that I will no longer be able to continue my subscription. I am a victim of police injustice violating my religious beliefs and my disabled of MS which he might have thought to be a mental illness. He kept turning off his bodycam so it will be his word against mine. I will be losing everything including my Baba Boo. My beautiful canine companion who choose me to be his Mama. He has been with me through the loss of my Husband who took his own life, and the loss of my big brother who was the happiest and most pure hearted person I ever knew. I hope The Melting will become a book someday. I will miss witnessing your magic unfold with every series. This community has been a lifesaver. I will miss you. 😢

Expand full comment

Well your post is pretty vague I mean really vague so I guess it's your word against theirs

Expand full comment

I didn't feel the need to give details as I am not making a formal statement here. I am having an MS attack and I'm not able to regulate my emotions well at the moment. I was pulled over for an expired tag as it had simply slipped my mind. I was pulled over in front of my home and made to wait in the car for 40 minutes when I respectfully asked him permission to use my bathroom and he denied me and kept me in the car and when I shifted slightly to hold a full bladder he went for his gun and I've never felt so much fear in my life. I'm a Hindu and I was wearing a head scarf as I do in deep grief 😔

I love this community. It is the only safe place for me on the internet as I am too sensitive to use social media and much of the internet is littered with bad news which is detrimental to my spiritual well being. I feel embarrassed by my comment and was about to delete it when I read your message. I hope this clears things up for you.

Expand full comment

And the reason I will lose everything is because I cannot use my car to get nourishment at my Temple where they provide vegetarian meals cooked with love and served woth compassion which I desperately need now. Some people in this world need a lesson on compassion. Too many human hearts have gone cold. 😭

Dear Patti, it will be about 3am for me but I’m going to try mightily to stay up. A quick question. In The Writer’s Song you shared with subscribers photographed and amended, you scratched out something and wrote in two words: is it bonzai or banzai. Google tells me banzai is a battle cry which seems more meaningful here. Am I right? Much love and thank you for being here with us so richly for so long. For me you go back to the 70s when I was a student in apartheid South Africa. 🙏🏽

A poignant day for me as my dear Dad died on 02.02.2018. However, I love the day, as for me it is a time of reflection of all the joy he gave me, and the wonderful long life he had, and although terribly missed, I do not feel sadness as much any more. It was his time. Grief takes time, and you mentioning the other joys of this date, reminds one how important it is to enjoy the moment, and enjoy your turn. Soooo Patti, and All, enjoy. Thank you so much ❤️

Patti, I had unsubscribed because I have a very poor command of English and translations are not always enough to transcribe the subtleties of the language.

I subscribe again because I miss your posts and I love you too much to stay away from your writings.

I dream of a new album in 2022 and one or more concerts in France.

I love you so, so much Patti 💙☕️❤️

My friend Marcia’s birthday! My groundhog lady and I have been friends and to have adored you since 1976. Is there such a thing as a subscription gift certificate?

Really looking forward to the event Patti. I'd love you to read a passage of your choice from your book, Babel. I'm currently rereading it. Also, I'm from South Wsles in the UK and it's said that to be Welsh is not to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth but to have music in your blood and poetry in your soul. . . So to have you read something from Dylan Thomas would be a very special treat....thank you. X

So loved your spontaneously looking up from Lenny's book to say, "Oh hello, everybody." Mr. Rogers couldn't have done it better. We feel it. :-)

NICE!!!! What a great way to welcome the year of the Water Tiger!! I'll be tuning in from the northern shores of Gitchee Gumi! (Lake Superior!) I will be so happy to have you there with me!

Oh! I forgot to make a request! At the Water Protectors rally on Gitchee Gumi last summer, I was so happy to hear a team-up of indigenous voices and young activist musicians cover Ghost Dance! Seems fitting to request that!! ❤️

“Follow me, reader! Who told you that there is no true, faithful, eternal love in this world! May the liar's vile tongue be cut out! Follow me, my reader, and me alone, and I will show you such a love!” Mikhail Bulgakov. And he does. I love The Master and Margarita. I've read it many times in many translations. I think he might be waiting for you to read from his book - a gift to humanity. To think that it was written in the times of Stalin!!

My recommendation....

In Brazil, February 2nd is the Day of Yemanjá. In the afrobrazilian tradition of Candomblé - a cultural and religious manifestation that transformed from its origins in West Africa to become what it is today -, Yemanjá is the orisha or spiritual entity associated with the sea. Mother Yemanjá. In places like Bahia, where the festivities around the orishas are very strong and beautiful, February 2nd is a day to go to the sea and give presents to it's sort of goddess, Yemanjá... That is mostly done with flowers but also with small decorated boats, lit up with candles, all drifiting outwards as the chants are sung by the crowd back on the sand. It's a sight to be seen. It's an auspicious date.

In case it might be of interest, here's Maria Bethania, Brazilian singer from Bahia singing a song known to all of us here in Brazil about this date of February 2nd!

Thank you patti. i finally subscribed. Finally because I have meant to for months but between being a grandparent/caregiver for the first time, my 95 year old mama who I have also been caregiving part time, and the possible freedom from Covid restrictions, work, and a million tiny details of life, I never did. You inspired me to do a substack myself. I am not nearly as consistent as you are though. And sometimes I just get embarrassed by what I share and end up waiting too long to post it. I tend to overshare .... but then I tend to feel like a coward for undersharing. what a balance it all is. Anyway, I'm going to go back to listening to the rest of this offering, I stopped the video to subscribe.

It is such an intimate and personal song and I have always wished to hear “farewell reel” played live or streamed. I often share the lyrics and the song with friends enduring loss. It communicates such grace and is always a comfort
