October 27th is for me a day of poets. It marks the birthdays of Dylan Thomas and Sylvia Plath and the passing day of Lou Reed. I remember perfectly the day Lou passed. I was at Rockaway Beach, standing before the sea, when my daughter Jesse called and told me that Lou had died. I thought of the clipper ship ending his song Heroin and gave him a salute. Sometime before I had covered his song A Perfect Day. He called me and said it was beautiful and that meant so much to me; it was not so easy to garner a compliment from Lou.
Though I was deeply sad, I knew he would have appreciated that he sailed away on the birthday of two of our great poets, for Lou cherished poetry. Below is our cover, a fairly modest cover, but happily liked by Lou.
I wish everyone some kind of peace of mind. Very hard to attain in these times. I will be back tomorrow on a stopover in Paris….
Hi I just watched the video. Sorry I didn't realize it was filled with pictures of me. Impossible to name all the photographers, but many by Lynn Goldsmith. You always turn the other way. I just wanted you to hear the song which I think is very nice....
Three great artists whose vision transformed and illuminated our world, word by extraordinary word. And all of them gone too soon.
Thank you for including Perfect Day. It's a perfect song. I'm glad we all got to spend some time with you.
