“Ring the bells that still can ring

Forget your perfect offering

There is a crack, a crack in everything

That's how the light gets in.

That's how the light gets in.

That's how the light gets in.”

Thank you Patti for sharing , it was a wonderful tribute. I too am In Australia…. Brisbane solemnly reflecting on our day of mourning for our Queen Elizabeth , so it was extra special to be able to watch and listen to all the wonderful words about marvellous Joan Didion, and your song…..thank you.

Thank you for sharing. I just finished watching and enjoyed the song you sang very much. 'And she glanced from the sign of freedom, flashing ... Joan.'

I am all the way over here in Sydney, Australia and today, 22 September, is a public holiday. Not one we have every year but one announced only after Queen Elizabeth's death as a 'day of mourning'.

It seems fitting that I should watch this today since Joan Didion touched my life much more than Queen Lizzy ever did. Much love, dear Patti. I enjoy your posts very much.

Thank you so much for letting us know about this, Patti. I’m just seeing it now because I’ve been working nearly nonstop on a lecture/talk I’m giving tomorrow/well, today. Someone at the facility has put together a PowerPoint deck based on notes that I’ve made. I have a page with some quotations, one of which is from Joan Didion: “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.”

I’m eager to hear your song for her and also to see the other speakers, so will watch as soon as my lecture is over tomorrow.

Thank you again, warm wishes to everyone.

What a wonderful tribute to a wonderful writer. I loved Magical Thinking so much, and made a special trip to NYC with my mom in 2007 to see Vanessa Redgrave perform it on stage (apparently with Joan "in the wings"!). Thanks so much for posting this, and for your beautiful performance to send her/us off.

for anyone who hasn't seen it, it you're interested there is a great doc on Netflix about Joan Didion's life and work called The Center Will Not Hold. It's a few years old..quite intriguing .

Something magical happens when you cover Dylan. I wondered what song you were going to chose and as many have said already, it was the perfect capstone to an extraordinary service. And how awe-inspiring was Vanessa Redgrave? Her reading had me transfixed.
