Hello everybody,
I know this is a pretty rough video, kind of laconic and a lot of text message dinging, but too much perfection is never good for anyone. Below is my little presentation speech for Lily Gladstone. Daniel Day Lewis gave a very touching speech for Martin Scorsese for best director. I was happy to note he opened with quotes from Andrei Tarkovsky.
I hope everyone is well. Please strengthen your immune system, a lot is going around. I am boiling yellow onions, adding turmeric, black pepper, fresh ginger, and cinnamon. After straining it you might want honey or cayenne pepper. In any event take care of yourselves.
Below are my words for Lily:
LILY
At its paramount, the merging of art and activism provides the people with revolutionizing truth, exposing what must be exposed and raising up what must be raised. Martin Scorsese’s film Killers of the Flower Moon presents an abysmal shard of American history, confronting our conscience with the collective experience of Indigenous People globally. It pierces the vein of human weakness, greed, cowardice and betrayal. And what is more piercing than the face of Lily Gladstone, as the camera captures the shifting tones of her interior process, seamlessly embodying the courageous Mollie Burkhart. Whether off or on screen, like the new moon, she could be felt if not seen.
Filmmaking is vastly dependent on intense collaboration and all who have taken part in bringing this film to light should be commended. But sometimes an artist must stand alone and draw solely from herself. As Mollie, Lily’s sense of the space around and the rushing energy of her own blood can be felt in every gesture, every side glance, in the lift of her head, in the folding of her hands, in the burgeoning illness, mirroring the afflictions imposed on her people, coupled with her stamina to love, heal and quietly condemn.
Heritage, humor, intelligence, earthy sensuality. She drew from the many aspects of herself, infusing them within her spiritual sister, the Osage woman Mollie Burkhart, with dignity and grace.
It is with great honor that I am here to present the National Board of Review Award for Best Actress to the awesome LILY GLADSTONE.
It’s such a great book….
There’s an hour film of them talking….on YouTube…from which the book is taken
it is so good that you presented the award to Lily Gladstone...a wonderful thing...gives one hope somehow....
Just watched Killers of the Flower Moon. Lily Gladstone is a new heroine for me. How fitting that my long-time heroine, Patti Smith, recognizes her.
Absolutely thrilled that we have the same water bottle.
So cool that you got to present the award and have a nice time at a nice table. I just read this on Tuesday! I’m late. Doldrums post-Iowa caucuses. I enjoyed this visit!
Ah, frogs' legs - recollections of times past and other places..
Watched this a few days late, but it’s made me so happy.
I love my water bottle too 😄
Thank you for this chat, Patti. I was in a bit of the doldrums too and you lifted me up. You always manage to lace together the serious and the light hearted aspects of living this life in complicated times. And to make me laugh. So happy that you checked in with your clean hair, an interesting book and your old coat xo
I love the word doldrums. I haven’t heard it for a long time and guess it’s a perfect word for January! How you cheered up during your description of meeting the stunt team, it was lovely to see. As far as clean hair and different jackets go l really don’t care, just to chat to you is enough and something l treasure. Keep well. Love from London 🙏
Like we're talking on the telephone, I like that. Casual chit chat. I know I know I am a few days late responding. Just taking in missed posts as I get ready for bed.
Need to see that installment of John Wick. Have a nice night or day (depending on when seeing this.)
What a beautiful speech to introduce the wonderful Lily Gladstone - she is such a powerful actress.
I hope that you are staying warm during this Siberian cold spell. It makes me want to hibernate.
Books, tea, an extra blanket and some movies are definitely in order.
Stay warm and hooray for John Wick.
I get pure joy out of these “ telephone calls talking about stupid shit”. . I laugh out loud at times! So happy that you keep on keepin on!
Dear Patti, I love it when my friends call to talk about "stupid shit". Beautiful photo of you and Lily Gladstone. Your words for "Lily" are spot on. Her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart will stay with me for a long time.
I don't love to watch movies with a lot of violence...but I do like John Wick. Somethin about that guy. Meeting the stunt team must have been cool.
Another wonderful moment of just hanging out.
Beautiful. I know you were there for her and that must not be diluted, BUT I have to say, dear woman what a treasure you are.
Patti- have you considered getting another Abyssinian? I think you are missing the sweet gentleness of Cairo. I know , I am. I hope you are feeling stronger these days.
Ahh dear Patti, what a lovely laid back ‘jam’ with you today. Thank you for your laconic playfulness and sharing your presentation speech for Lily, and all your words of wisdom too!
Martin Scorsese, director of ‘Killer of the Flower Moon’,interviewed by LA times.He speaks of Robbie Robertson's memorial. Martin is a good Italian-American director.
His next film will be an adaptation of Shusaku Endo's novel ‘A Life of Jesus’.Patti would have liked the novel. Looking forward to the film.
For Martin Scorsese, it’s all about forgiveness

Thank you, Yoshi. A Life of Jesus sounds fascinating, set, so it seems, in the present day. Scorcese's Last Temptation of Christ is a masterpiece and his adaptation of Endo's Silence is also magnificent. I really look forward to this film.
I just ordered the book, it looks quite fascinating! :)
I will get a copy as well.
Thanks for reminding us that plastic is bad for the environment! I enjoy ocean swimming and every time we swim, we try to “take 3 for the sea” . Every little bit helps!
Thank you Patti. Love this post. You don't seem in the doldrums too much - maybe a new breeze is springing up that your sails are about to catch... By coincidence I have just received a new publication by Another Gaze - Marguerite Duras 'My Cinema' - also interviews and some images and some screenplays. I havent statrted it yet either. It looks great. (BTW Im the idiot who recommended Herzogs 'Of Walking in Ice' to you before I realised you are friends and Im sure know the book!)
Are you considering adopting another cat, so many animals need homes
Hearing you talk about Godard / Duras <3 made me think of your appearance in Godard's Film Socialisme. (What a great movie btw.) Did you get a chance to bend his ear?
Your doldrums were very calming for me. Thank you.
"my brush with stunt fame" What a fun watch this was. Thank you!
Thank you, Patti. You look well despite feeling so tired. I enjoy listening to you thought-walk...yes, it's like chattin on the phone. Yes, ditch the plastic. Take care. 🎈
I love you Patti . I love the way you use technology, so inspiring. I will look for the book! And yes, enough plastic i only drink filtered water . Oh yes i love your speech , thank you for sharing it. You are the best . God bless you all
Not necessary to wear a gown to be elegant. Isn’t ?. You know that. But at least clean hair and a nice shirt could be a good idea …
Take care.
And thank you for reminding me to add black pepper to my turmeric tea!
I’ve been in the doldrums too, so I’m grateful for these moments of uplift you provide. Rest and be well, and don’t bother changing your jacket or washing your hair unless you want to. Miss seeing Cairo by your side. I’m sure you miss her too.
I was so glad to be able to watch your video and to hear your words again. I had been having trouble trying to comment and to watch.bbyt all is well tonight. Your award speech for Lily Gladstone is so uplifting and strong. Thanks for sharing it and telling us about the ceremony and about the Godard book. I am just so glad that I seem to have access to your page again. Happy New year, Patti.
Love to you, Patti
You crack me up! I love everything about today's message!
Any time, any place Patti. 💜
thanks for all that Patti . will take this quote to heart "too much perfection is never good for anyone" and the frog legs bit...now i can't get the looney tunes dancing frog out of my head. ;-)
One exceedingly easy way to reduce your plastic use is to use bar shampoo! Trader Joe’s sells a terrific one at a really good price that lasts and lasts and provides plenty of lather. There are lots of others available, too. I’m definitely saving money on shampoo as well as reducing my plastic consumption.
I’m really proud of Patti for highlighting the danger of plastic particles in bottle water. Thank you!
Don't change your clothes or wash your hair for your audience! Now I feel I should check out the John Wick movies. Thank you for your calm and humour. Thank you for reminding people not to buy plastic bottles.
Thank you dear Patti. This video had me smiling and giggling on this polar cold afternoon. For me, washing my hair and slipping into a warm familiar jacket makes it a gold star day. Thank you also for the book and movie recommendations. I too enjoy the Wick movies and didn't realize that the 4th one was out. Also looking forward to seeing Lily Gladstone in this award winning role. I have admired her work in Reservation Dogs and Billions. Best wishes for a restful weekend
Great post. Got me smiling; also in the doldrums but swept up by your post. On to some Hi-Life to dance right out of these doldrums!
I love you, Patti -- don't ever change! I'm always thrilled to take time out and have some fun and celebration with you in this wonderful community. Beautiful speech....I'm sure Lily was indeed honored.
I dreamed a dream
of st Francis who kneeled and prayed
for the birds and the beasts and all human kind
all through the night I felt drawn in by him
and I heard him call like a distant hymn
I retreated from the silence of my room
stepping down the ancient stones
washed with dawn
and entered the basilica that bore his name
seeing his effigy I bowed my head
and my racing heart, I gave to him
I kneeled and prayed
*Constantine's Dream* by Patti Smith (Patti in 173 days have you in Barcelona...great!!! Patti's Concert)
Thanks for the story of the gala. I've sometimes wondered what it would feel like to be surrounded by so many celebrities. I love that you enjoy those moments while not getting caught up in the pretense of it all. You're always you, always Patti, and that's why I love your videos.
A good jacket is good every/any day. Before you said anything about it, I was admiring the classic red wool and that it seems to be a part of your “uniform” lately. The expectation that we need to wear different clothes all the time or clean them after every use is another burden to the earth and our limited attention and energy, in my opinion. Curious that your black jacket also came up in this post. Your quintessential stage uniform juxtaposed with the fashionable gowns...
Keep that playful mode on , please Patti!
You’ve been lifting my days up with your beautiful music, awesome voice and unique lyrics for quite a long time, dear Patti. And your lovely pop-ups here are anti-doldrums by default. The secret is you – Patti Smith. So please don’t change anything. Neither your jacket! 😁 Love from Italy 💕💕
Patti and fellow substack readers, Tez Steinberg is rowing solo from Hawaii to Australia with the United World Challenge to help solve the ocean plastic crisis. I have a beautiful photo over my mantle from his first expedition when he rowed from California to Hawaii. I’m fascinated by the updates he posts about his journey, and in awe of what he is doing.
Here is the website for United World Challenge to see his progress:
https://unitedworldchallenge.org/expedition-2-story-map/
This is so interesting Beth, I just checked out the link ... so wonderful!
He lives in my community and I was so pleased to meet him before his second expedition when he came to work out at the gym. A truly nice person.
Filled with gems and treasures...in a most natural trajectory. It is relaxing-thank you
Enjoyed hearing a recap of your day. You always say a tidbit that makes me laugh aloud. Good for the soul! Thanks for sharing your life with us—the travel, the performances, the books, the people you meet as well as the simplicity of your life.
I love wandering the Village in NYC and the cafes in the Latin Quarter in Paris when I visit. Perhaps I’ll see you drinking coffee in a cafe someday! That would be a cool experience. Would love to see you and your band perform in your Carnegie Hall concert one day or the Salt Shed, or at a venue in Paris. It seems that I learn about them afterward. I have a poster of you and Fred at a concert in Paris in my office, probably kind of strange for someone my age, but it inspires me when I’m writing. Merci!
Thank you for this visit, Patti, and for including the text of your words for Lily Gladstone, which are moving and true. I especially like what you said about art “exposing what must be exposed and raising up what must be raised.” I can think of no better time to hear that call.
I’ve been in the doldrums too. It’s hard not to despair over the state of things which seems to get more dire each day. Work helps because at least one feels one is doing something, no matter how small. And it really helps to hear from and see you, Patti, and to be in this community.
I have to get back to work but thank you again, Patti. Seeing and hearing you is always uplifting.
Your speaking of missing the snow made me think of the great passage that ends James Joyce’s story, “The Dead” and I wanted to share it. It fits my mood and maybe it will resonate with some of you.
With wishes to all for good health and fortitude.
Here is Joyce:
“Yes, the newspapers were right: snow was general all over Ireland. It was falling softly upon the Bog of Allen and, further westwards, softly falling into the dark mutinous Shannon waves. It was falling too upon every part of the lonely churchyard where Michael Furey lay buried. It lay thickly drifted on the crooked crosses and headstones, on the spears of the little gate, on the barren thorns. His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.”
Thanks for the Joyce, Robin. I have long believed that last sentence is the most beautiful ending to a story I have ever read. So good to be reminded of it today with snow on the ground in Toronto. All the best to you and to your important work.
Warm wishes to you, Jim.
Thank you for another uplifting check in with us. I put my down jacket on as I started watching this video, so warm coats are in order.:) The sun is up on this Arctic Blast of a morning and several birds are flocking at the feeder on the deck, dark eyed juncos, house finches, sparrows. Beautiful singers to lift us from the doldrums.
💛✨💛✨💛✨💛✨💛✨💛✨💛✨💛
Thanks for mentioning the plastic apocalypse we’re so merrily causing. There are small changes we can make that are basically taking the time to change habits - imho we need leaders to inspire us to make them and unite to make big ones.
This does seem to be a doldrum-y time for many people. Not personally able to muster the energy to be very hopeful. I volunteer with cats at a shelter and being with them gives me happy moments.
I do feel calmed by your words.
In your world of presentations and dinners with award winning creators and celebrities and constant dinging phone messages and my world of silence and solitary meals, I find it interesting how we meet on a plane of doldrums.
Thank you for sharing your world, thoughts and what you are reading. It certainly helps to chase away my doldrums! I hope yours fade away too.
So good to hear from you on this dreary day on LI this morning, I've had the doldrums since new years too but taking this time to nurture and catch up with my reading and I've been watching some amazing movies and series, just finished watching Little Bird on PBS and wow what a powerful series! Loved flower moon also, you look wonderful Patti! Love a cozy sweater in the winter! Thanks for the recipe! ✌🏻
Thanks fir the encouragement to try Little Bird!
We have those moments when we let our hair down, or days when we wear the same thing over and over but They don’t. Or maybe They do? ...the gods, goddesses, angels, our Hero’s - They have them too!...They’re just like Us or is it that We’re just like Them?
Thank you Patti for connecting to Us. It’s energy on the down low for you while an uplift for us. You’re my Hero, thank you for the lift.❤️
Really, really beautiful & inspiring. Thank you!
The Atlantic had an article/interview "The Feeling of Losing Snow." Heartbreaking and linked below. On a recent trip to Canada, I learned how the ecosystem depends on snow. Animals need to "freeze-bury" their food, for example, because it is harder to come by in winter months. Then of course, there is the aesthetic and spiritual- the mysterious quiet that comes with a snowfall, the sense of seeing the world differently, and for me, a childish delight and awe. Those who say "what a wonderfully mild winter" are like the frog in the increasingly hot pot of water saying "how wonderfully warm this pond is." I fear and I mourn.

beautiful photo of you and Lily Gladstone!
Thank you Patti. On 12/20 my building caught fire here in NYC and I have since been without a home. I have been consumed with all the details of recovery and urgent necessity. This video made me laugh for the first time in quite a while! Thank you for that. Thank you for the reminder that we all need a little fun. Love ps... John Wick is THE BEST!
Thank you for putting a smile on my face!
“Revolutionary truth” 🙏 Yes!! .. serendipitously I found and watched, “Notorious RBG,” after reading your tribute for Lily. In the documentary a person comes up with the slogan, “there’s no truth without Ruth.” 2 reminders that truth is the way to communication understanding and love. Thank you Patti pleased be well🙏🌹
Hi Patti! How cool is this medium that allows us to be with you on a regular basis?! If someone told the 14 year old me while I was listening to Horses in my bedroom that one day in the future I would be watching and listening to Patti Smith in her bedroom I'd a said they were out of their fucking mind! I love everything about you. Thank you for being a part of the soundtrack of my life and for giving the world messages of hope here.
I know! Horses was life-changing for me( long story). I have to pinch myself watching these videos.i feel like I’ve known Patti forever.
Yes. You are so correct. Yes. Powerful messages here, what’s important.
The characters on the thermos on the right-hand side of the book of dialogues between Duras and Godard are written in Japanese hiragana 'ra-ku'. Its meaning is relaxation or fun. Unusual bottle, not seen very often.
Goven to me by a wonderful friend.
good morning Patti... thanks for your morning wake up wonderfulness ... can you say who makes the water bottle? thank you...
I watched "Killers of the Flower Moon" at the theatre twice. I would have loved to be at that table with you, Martin and Lily. ❤️
Ahhh winter! Good to be cozy with books and warmth. Could be low thyroid? Just happened to a friend. Thanx for your chats.
Patti I wrote a poem about our father's father's - Larkin ish but more modern - would love you to put your glims on it.
https://tumbleweedwords.substack.com/p/the-sun-will-rise-within-your-eyes
keep beating the doldrums Patti! Xx
what's the point of a gala is there's no dancing ??? ... what's the point of ANYTHING if there's no dancing, really ??? ... thanx for making us dance ... & smile ... & laugh ... & have FUN ... OBVIOUSLY ... #dancingbarefoot
^^^ *if there's no dancing
Hi #thisispattismith Patti, I thank you for being the near only one coming real close to your public via here! Special to hear you recommend recipes against Winter’s harshness on us. Special to keep track of your experiences literary, musically, about life’s wisdoms and Caring. Thank you🌺❣️😍🎶💃🕺🌷🌹🌺
Haven’t seen Killers of the Flower Moon yet, an honour to give an award to Lily Gladstone, but what an honour she received it from YOU! January can be a dark month both mentally and physically, at least you have a new DVD to watch and new book to read! I always wonder do you buy your books at the book shop or order online?! I love books too, stay cosy Patti, love from Scotland 🍂
I’ve been afraid to watch Killers. I’m afraid it will be too sad and infuriating ; I‘m already experiencing both in spades right now.
Oh Patti I'd be so happy to talk stupid shit with you on the phone any day. Glad you had a blast with the stunt guys, and said what should have been said for Lily Gladstone. Sleep tight.
“Stupid shit” way better than what the world seems to want us to dwell...bring it on.
Hello Patti,
I’ve been in a bit of a funk for a while now. Well these whole 13 days of the year actually.
It’s very unlike me to be that way, I have no idea why, but I’m sure it will pass, everything does.
As I was listening to you and chuckling over you being with “famous people!” I started to TRY to imagine you in a dress that they wear to these occasions. I just couldn’t do it. Then I started to think how cool it would be if everyone dressed like you instead and that was easy to imagine and rather a brilliant image.
I’m just beginning to watch
Killers of the flower moon.
I tried to listen to the audiobook but It just wouldn’t go into my head.
Maybe after the movie I will revisit the book and I will get a different take on the whole adventure.
Oh how I wish the world would just be a bit less competitive. The people I mean. I thank god every day that I don’t have that in me. I’ve always been so happy to be imperfect me.
Maybe it’s seeing all the false realities that make us so tired, there is so much of it these days, I think 💭
I’ve just finished watching Killers of the flower moon.
I am so confused by it. Who’s the bad guys, who’s the good guys? How did it happen, why did the Osage not seem to have any rights (although as I type that, it seems like a dumb question) As an Australian, I’m sure things like that happened here in exactly the same way. I just hope one day I find out I’m an alien, some people are such a disappointment.
Sending you warm wishes, Jayne. Hopeful, as ever, that things will change.
Thank you Robin, I’m sure it’s just some cosmic re alignment!
I love that picture of you and Lilly and so delighted that she won the Golden Globe.
A beautiful speech for Lily, I love your writing
so nice to read your encompassing words for Lily. thank you for sharing them and some of your experiences there.
and then to contemplate the difference between the doldrums and down in the dumps.
there are a few attributed meanings and origins on the net... i like these two:
To understand the origin of the phrase “down in the dumps,” we need to go back to the 1500s and take a look at how Shakespeare used it. He mentioned the phrase several times in his work “The Taming of the Shrew,” like in this excerpt, “Why, how now, daughter Katharina! In your dumps?”
and
is derived from the Middle Dutch word. domp, meaning a mist. 'Down In The Dumps' was jocularly said to be derived. from Dumpos,a king of Egypt,who died of melancholy.
~~~~~
A writer, Kristina Kaine, in her book of The Holy Nights, refers to these kind of thoughts as the black doves, which whilst not being all that pleasant when being experienced- i can’t help but love.
Thank you. That was inspiring informative and entertaining.
Poor melancholic Dumpas!
thank you Patti!
and yes, you can’t help but imagine crestfallen King Dumpos on his lavish, gold Egyptian throne. Perhaps this modern invocation of his name will liberate his thoughts and he will feel our sympathies.
i woke up this morning, realising i perhaps also ought to have mentioned the white doves.. the antidote to the black ones..
Kristina returns to this theme a few times in her little book, and you get the feeling she has wrestled with this herself. This is one of the passages:
“Consciously purify the body of thought. Discipline thinking. Concentrating on the positive. Converting the black doves of thought into white doves.
Thinking must now move forward to become the pure “white dove”. This is a new way of thinking called pure or living thinking, which is completely free of the brain. Living thought does not use concepts developed in the past. Living thought enters into the stream of pure thought that regulates the Universe.”
easier said than done sometimes, but also aspirational. 🕊🤍
Aotearoa's former Prime Minister Jacinda Adern married her partner Clarke Gayford today, after a long delay, as her big day was postponed due to Covid Lockdowns. At a secret location (hardly!), there has been much speculation on which fashion designer she would wear. It's great you don't have to oblige the glitterati, or paparazzi with gowns, when you fulfill your duties. Your red checked coat reminds me of the emblematic Kiwi "Swannee" shirt. It's cheering to see you buck the system!
Sorry, I mean "Swanndri" jacket
I love that you just hang out and share like a phone call! Thanks Patti! Take good care of yourself because we need to hear from you and wear whatever you like 🌺
Talking about stupid shit (your words) is just what I needed tonight. ❤️
You are our “star”. Thank you for keeping it real.
you can get those water purifier things...Those bottles are such an unnecessary blight on our planet.
Dear Patti,
You Rock! It's good to see you staying busy and presenting at award shows and ofcourse you are just coming home from touring all over the world. No wonder you are tired. :)😀 Please take care of yourself and get lots of rest after your busy year. You deserve to take some time off. Love you! Tina from the Arizona high desert. Yes, we have had snow the lest week.
You were the medicine I needed.Merci
Thank you for always making me smile when I need it most. Your posts are priceless. Never change. 🕊💙📚🎶
I so love your videos! It's like talking to a new friend. Please keep them coming. Please take good care of yourself. See you soon. P.S. It doesn't matter what you wear! We all have a 'woubbie', a sweatshirt or jacket that is both warm and comfortable. Make no Excuses! We are honored by your presence.
Thank you for the nice immunity boosting message.
Samgyetang, a Korean soup with chicken, is a great way to catch a cold.
It works better than drugs when you have a cold. It is served at a restaurant called "Gurume" near Greenwich Village in New York City.
https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Samgyetang&find_loc=New+York%2C+NY
Here's a video of how it's made.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8M8Rm_kD34
It's a great meal to have when you have a cold. It is often sold in Japanese supermarkets. Patti watches Korean dramas, so please try it.
Where else could we get Godard, Duras, Lily Gladstone, Scorsese, Daniel Day-Lewis and you getting so excited about the John Wick 4 stunt team? Absolutely fabulous. Throw in the advice about plastics - harmful not only to our systems but to the world's systems as well - and it was a perfect 'telephone call'. Please get the rest you need and take good care.
Dear Patti: I love your posts, never miss one! It’s like checking in with a good friend. Continue to wear your nice warm jacket, it looks like it keeps the drafts out. Here in Jamaica we don’t have many cold spells. I notice your CND sign in the background! Take care of yourself.
Patti you bring me joy and I eagerly await each new post. Loved your speech also. x
I am so happy that she won that award! What a beautiful tribute to her film role and her activism. Receiving it from you is the cherry on the top as well as having Daniel Day Lewis there.
You always have the best stories, Patti! Thanks for lifting me out of the doldrums.
Thank you for sharing your experience at the National Board of Review Award events. It is always uplifting for me, to turn on the computer and see a message from you. Always inspiring and informative. As far as the clothes - you needn't change.. Everyone loves your understated cool style. I also keep my water in a thermos -keeps the fresh taste.
You fangirling is the best thing ever!!
Hey, just wanted to say be careful with turmeric if you’re taking a blood thinner. I suffered a brain hemorrhage stroke in June because of the combination. Just a helpful hint because ICU was no fun except I wrote one of my better songs while on my back hooked up to monitors 😁
John Wick Stunts!!! Yaaaas! And Daniel Day! Have you seen him in "The Unbearable Lightness of Being?" Also one of my favourite books by Milan Kundera. Just the best! An old flick but still stands. You must miss Cairo, especially in the eye of the dulldrums. Have you thought of a SAD lamp and a new cat friend? I too washed my hair after a busy working week in film (no stunts). A great feeling! I spent a great portion of day trying to put booties on my dog because of the salt and snow! Come to Vancouver, the mountains are a gorgeous blanket of white. Love & Light, Ruby D
Keep your woolen jacket on if it keeps out the chill. Our weather changed this week with a blast of arctic air (thanks Canada). I put my new wool blanket on the bed and it does make a difference. Yay to wool and the sheep that provide it and the artisans that craft it.
I saw Roseanne Cash perform this week in a club in Mpls. She's doing a small tour celebrating getting back the masters from her album The Wheel and remastering it on her own record label. It was wonderful to hear live music. She's a great story teller as well and singer-songwriter, of course. Her husband John Leventhal was with her.
I try to stay positive by reviewing the good things going on in my life. That's how I get through winter doldrums. Take care Patti, thank you for this post. 💞
We learned a long time ago from the movie "The Graduate" about 'plastics'!! Thanks for sharing your photo moment with the Wick crew! Such fun! It's nice to relax and contemplate!
I like your jacket. I've been wanting a flannel shirt, but probably shouldn't add to the closet.
adored this video
felt comforting and couldn’t help but smile
like a phone call with patti smith - what a treasure you are in this eorkd
world!
I also have the doldrums, it was nice listening to you, feeling like I had a friend to beat the doldrums with.
That was fun! I think it’s the time of year for doldrums, and I agree, a nice fluffy white snow would change my mood.
Please don’t change your clothes on our account. I tend to wear the same clothes days at a time.. no judgement! and, The way you felt meeting the John Wick people is the same way I felt meeting you once! ❤️
Having a wretched day. Thank you thank you for your salt-of-the- earth, simple observations of your day to day experiences. It's a comfort to know that we are not that different. I am 74 and you are such an inspiration.
Thank you for all the calming ways you share the reflections of your life.
We're all feeling the doldrums. I love the jacket, it looks great on you, nice color. Your hair looks fabulous when washed, love it. Maybe you could wear sunglasses next time. I know you don't like to wig it up, but it would be a fun look to change it up.
“too much perfection is never good for anyone” 🙌🏼👏🏼💗☕️
I'm going to tell you again because yes, I am that annoying :) BUT Wellness Formula by Source Naturals has never let me down, even through the pandemic.
So nice for you to "stop by" for a chat today! It was the perfect end to the day. And who better than you to present Lily Gladstone with her well-deserved award. Killers of the Flower Moon was magnificent, and your words are right on. Thank you as always, Patti.
In the winter, doldrums almost mid-January is not an unusual place to be. I'll bet
though, as soon as you pick up the conversations of Duras and Goddard, the doldrums won't be able to maintain their grip. With a good book, and a cuppa tea (or coffee for me) I wish you a very good evening. And when you're at home, comfort is
key, right? Mind how you go, Patti.
We love you because you're YOU, Patti. If you started wearing ball gowns, I think we would all show up on your doorstep to take you to the ER. :-) I always get the doldrums at the first of the year. Maybe it's the lack of sun, maybe it's the holiday letdown, I'm not sure. But you're not alone in that. As others have said, I'm spending my doldrums discovering new books and music and nesting, which is making things better after all. I was not sure whether to watch the John Wick movies (not a fan of macho violence), but I'll take your recommendation - thanks! All the best...
Patti, your posts are like a tonic to me. They make me smile. Also, you have very graceful, beautiful hands. Stay well.
Love you Patti! You’re my North Star ⭐️
I love your jacket and I love that you love the John Wick movies as much as I do 👍😂
It’s boiling hot in Sydney right now- the most humid it’s been since records began. I was drinking a cup of morning tea, wondering what the day held and your video popped up to delight and inspire me. Thank you for being you. ❤️❤️❤️
It is always a delight to hear from you and to see you. I am recovering from a cold and have my fine-looking metal water bottle here beside me (it is blue with yellow stars and moons on it.) I must try your tea recipe! I've been drinking a ginger lemon, raw honey with a cinnamon stick, and an extra splash of orange juice while I was sick, and it really helped a lot with my cough and scratchy throat. I kept my thermos on the nightstand so if I started hacking at night, it was very soothing, and I was able to sleep well. I was just learning the good things about dandelion root tea, and I will try that one. I'm always trying to find something to help my old body keep running well because I do have so much to do! We're getting more wind tonight, and we're keeping our fingers crossed that we don't lose power! (Amazingly, we didn't last time!) We're in for it this weekend, and next week is going to be very bitter cold. I'm not complaining - it is January! Take care, my dear!! Love & hugs.
Hi Patti
I was isolating all week w (mild) Covid and actually enjoyed the excuse to stay home, not change clothes or wash my hair. Finally stepped out earlier to walk and get some fresh air w my pooch. It was nice to come home and find you here. You certainly don’t need to apologize for chillin’, especially since you did appear and present at quite a cool event last night. And by the way, there are always wonderful nuggets you gift us even in these more impromptu chats. Thanks for sharing your mood, experience, book, wisdom and advice about plastic. xo 🤗♥️🙏
Love you Patti Be wel, l thank you beautiful human ❤️
we do not care if you change your jacket! filtered water is the most eco friendly and responsible practice.
this might be my favorite video of yours! maybe because i'm in the duldrums, too, and also just washed my hair lol. take care of yourself and remember this is a great time of year to just rest. :)
The Graduate tried to warn us about plastics but to no avail. High winds in the desert here. Swept tumbleweeds from the back door. Nothing to say except that I always like the messages even if to just say hello and be alive albeit times of much troubles. My water container lost its handle years back but it stays with me like my old purple cow did at one time..
Thanks for showing up and showing yourself as is. Celebrate Doldrums and all its beauty! What you see is what you get.
And yes NO more plastic, single use plastic water bottle usage is the worst!
Love your talks. ❤️
Hi Patti I’m sending you cheery vibes to help you thru the doldrums . Your hair is awesome, love it . Thanks for sharing yourself with us! ✌🏼💜
Ooo surprise Patti posts are the best. Add a playful Patti for the win. Glad you had fun meeting of the Stunt men for John wick. While watching you my partner O said FOX! 🦊 yes across my creek a fox was walking. That was my fun. You can wear whatever you want. Just to hear and see you gives me joy. Peace love and strength to you.
Ps hopefully I can find that book and see if Duras / Godard have a playful tiff. You have peaked my interest 🥰🙏
How lucky to see a fox!
I saw one last night around midnight as the moon luminated over the fabled streets of cobbled Edinburgh
In a new personal revolution I'm crunching daily on raw tumeric and the results are amazing...it tastes disgusting tho and not sure what to do about the yellow teeth 😂 swing and roundabouts/rollercoasters and dodgems!
Also Im still wearing my Christmas pajamas under my work clothes if that's any consolation to you! I'm pretending they are long John's but nope...red and green stripey Grinch pajamas! 🌟 Rest as well as u can 😀
What kind of results (besides the yellow teeth) are you noticing?
Of course I was attempting to beat Patti's doldrums but also I get quite a lot of internal inflammation....I definitely works for that and I've tried pretty much everything. Feels like taking herbal medicine and works for me 😀
Love the backwards books, I know I'm in the right place when they appear 😊💚
I am happy you got to go to such a grand event. Martin Scorsese is great. What a director. I have seen more early Scorsese films such as Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, etc., but haven’t seen Killers of the Flower Moon yet. I’ve got to get with the program. Lily Gladstone looks awesome in the film. It is on my list. Nice pic of you and her btw. Good to see you! Have a great evening!
Every time I watch one of your videos it makes me happy. If feels like you're talking directly to me. In the world of music and celebrity, you're among the people I respect and value the most. Seeing you perform at Stern Grove this year was a magical experience. Thanks for all that you do.
I look forward to seeing the film. Your hair looks great, Patti! Yes, under the sink filters and no plastic bottled water.
This whole video chat made me smile so much, Patti! It truly is like sitting with a dear friend and talking about all kinds of sh-t, as you said. Thank you for sharing your world with us!
The weather here in the central west coast of Florida has been dreary and mostly chilly (by our standards, anyway) and has me feeling a bit tired and blah myself, so I’m feeling that with you.
Your tribute to Lily was beautifully said!
Enjoy your tea and evening 🫖
That’s right dear, be real
Love your playful moods!!
Patti you look great! Whole lotta love to you and stay safe. Happy weekend! 🏹❤️❤️🪽
What well crafted observations you made in your speech. Those words will be carried in her heart always. I had just before that read over my dear friend and former colleague’s tribute to me when I retired and I hold those thoughts like pearls to go over again from time to time. It warms my soul. Thank you for your useful recipes and water drinking prompts etc. I live in N Ireland and the same applies with the pestilence afoot- I’m laid up too with my chest. I send you gratitude, wish you peace and healing. It’s a time for hibernation but that brings reading riches and musical discovery that life wouldn’t normally permit such untrammelled access to so I’m taking the good out of it. Keep getting stronger. Love, Pauline
Lovely tribute and thanks for sharing the Duras / Godard book. I too have been wearing the same clothes for a few days. It is cold so being comfortable is the best we can do. I will try that recipe too! Sending gratitude and warmest wishes.
All so beautiful!! And I LOVE that pic of you with Lily! May I just say that you are and have always been one of the most graceful and badass agers of all time. You are always so extremely powerful and beautiful and in your years.
nice to hear you tell of enjoyments ! it doesn't matter what you wear - but I do appreciate the washed hair ! tee tee -
Stay cozy Patti 💛Love your tea recipe!
You have such a genuine way of reminding me to be humble. Thank you for sharing and being so real💛
What a beautiful tribute.
Beautifully written capture of her excellent work. It’s a gift to have such a true story told and people hopefully learning from it. Education needs to happen in many forms so the criminality of human abuses in history aren’t repeated. So glad it was you that presented that to her. So perfect. ✨
Enjoyed the fun phone conversation and array of topics. Your freshly washed hair looks great and love the warm wool jacket. Your posts always brighten my days, especially today with the dark clouds and rain. No more plastic! Peace and all good.
